Just yesterday, Apple finally gave us a date for it’s HomePod smart speaker. Releasing a lot of extra info that we didn’t get last summer when the HomePod was first introduced. Personally, I am really interested in the HomePod. I only have one smart speaker right now, a SONOS PlayBase. I only use it for music 1% of the time. And while it sounds great, I bought it for my TV, not to listen music with it. I would love a HomePod on my desk. Maybe one in my bathroom/bedroom as well. I’ll see what one can do first.
Although I really follow Apple’s WWDC keynote talking about speakers that are smart but don’t sound great. HomePod is supposed to be very smart and sound great. I invested in Philips Hue lights about a year ago and I could use a smart speaker to control them easier, since HomePod has far field microphones unlike my iPhone, which can’t understand what I am saying when I am in another room.
As most of you did yesterday I was browsing the HomePod page on apple.com . I liked what I was reading until I saw this:
No Airplay 2 AND no stereo HomePods at launch? Then why did they delay this? Apple is about making the best products. And is known for not shipping a product until it’s ready, right? Then what the fuck is this?
The statement Apple released when they announced the delay:
“We can’t wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple’s breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it’s ready for our customers,” Apple said in a statement. “We’ll start shipping in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018.”
They needed a little more time to do what exactly? I am very disappointed in Apple for releasing an unfinished product. It would be like Apple releasing the next iPhone with 3 camera’s in the back but you can’t use it yet you can only use it “later this year…” Making a stereo pair was one of the key features at WWDC and now suddenly it’s not here with the release. Who at Apple thought this was acceptable?
I can only hope that Apple means ASAP with ‘Coming later this year.’ Why wouldn’t someone buy a SONOS One? It sounds good, it has Alexa build in and you can already set them up in stereo or add them to your house for multi room audio.
I was already planning on buying just one. But for those planning to buy two and stereo them, have to wait. Also for people who want to make a multi room audio experience with HomePod, are left out in the cold. (Which is strange because those are the people who might buy 4-5 HomePods…)
What do you think? Do you think the multi room audio and the stereo matter? Let me know in the comments!
